ADSL Modem or the DSL modem is a device which is used for connecting a single computer or a router with a DSL phone line. This is done for using it as an ADSL service. There are some ADSL modems that also establish connection and sharing of the ADSL service with different machines which include the unit which is termed a DSL router or residential gateway. ADSL Modems which is also used for modulations demodulation and framing, while other functional blocks perform Asynchronous Transfer Mode Segmentation and Reassembly, IEEE 802.1D. The ADSL Modems that work as a bridge that does not require any IP address. It sometimes also has one assigned for the purpose of management.

The ADSL Modems and the voiceband modem are the two devices that serve basically the same purpose but have certain differences the differences are described as below:
- Many of the ADSL modems are externally connected to the computer and are wired to the computer's Ethernet port, or occasionally its USB port, whereas voiceband modems are often found inside the computer. Internal DSL modems (with PCI interface) are not so common but available.
- Some of the Microsoft Windows and different operating systems also do not distinguish between external DSL modems, and that is why they do not have any Property Sheet or other internal method to arrange them.
- This difference is found because the transmitter and computer both are considered separately in the nodes in the LAN, rather than the transceiver which is like a device entirely controlled by the computer such as webcams, mice, keyboards and others. They are only forwarding ones and zeros from one medium CAT5 to another one telephone line.
- In the internal ADSL modems different operating systems such as the Microsoft windows and some other operating systems provide different interfaces which are similar to be provided for the voiceband modems. The complete thing is based on the assumption that goes forwards as the CPU speeds increasing, the internal DSL modems that may become more mainstream.
- ADSL modems vary in data speed from hundreds of Kilobits per second to many Megabits, while voiceband modems are limited to approximately 50 kbit/s.
- Most of the ADSL modems are meant for specific protocols they sometime also do not work on any other line even from the same company
Many of these differences are not directly concerned to the consumers only apart from the greater speed of DSL and the ability to use the telephone even when the computer is online. The ADSL modem also has certain hardware components that are provided by the multiple chips that all can be integrated into a single chip. The ADSL modem requires different things for smooth operation including the following:
- DSL analog chip and line driver
- Micro controller
- Power supply: Transformer and capacitor
- Data connection and power circuitry
- DSL digital data pump
- Filter
